The Pousse Café

When entertaining at home, anything you can do to entice the senses will enhance the event. Flowers and candles do a lot with visual and aromatic pleasures. The Pousse Café adds the taste dimension into the mix and is also visually appealing.

The challenge is creating this colorful and delicious libation. Here are some techniques that will make it easy to do:

Find a good recipe for Pousse Café. Most recipes call for three ingredients, but I found one at make-a-drink.info that has five ingredients. They are:

  1. Grenadine
  2. Maraschino liqueur
  3. Creme de violette
  4. Green Chartreuse
  5. Brandy

Visit your local liquor store and stock up on these items.

Next, gather some cordial (tall thin glasses) to hold the drink. You will also need several shot glasses, one for each ingredient you plan to use.

Doing a little (ugh!) math, determine how much of each ingredient you will need in order to fit them all into the cordial. The ingredients do not have to be in equal parts, but it makes it easier and looks more professional. Pour into each shot glass the appropriate amount from each ingredient. Place each shot glass in order of liqueur weight from heaviest to lightest. The recipe above is already in that order.

Starting with the heaviest liqueur first, and working down through the lightest, tilt your cordial glass to about a 30 degree angle and slowly pour the liqueur into the glass from the shot glass. Speed isn’t important and can be your downfall, so keep it slow and easy. Carefully et the cordial down and begin working on the next one.

It’s that simple! If you want to experiment on your own, which is a lot of fun, I recommend downloading a list of liqueurs rated by weight and color. I found a great list at everything2.com/title/Table+of+liquor+specific+weights which will help you to create your own recipe.
